Handwashing vs. Mechanical Cleaning Of Laboratory Glassware

A comparison of the EPA Trace Metal Analysis test was performed using duplicate sets of glassware. One set was acid washed by hand and the other was cleaned in the Miele Model PG8593 Flex Series Labwasher. Procare 10AP and Procare 30C alkaline and acidic cleaning agents were used. Test results show that the Miele Flex Series model PG8593 labwasher gave results better than or equal to handwashing.

This test was performed to compare the efficacy of the Miele Flex Series laboratory glassware washer, specifically model PG8593, in cleaning glassware used in trace metal analysis, to manually washing glassware by hand.

TEST PROCEDURE:
The test was performed as follows:
Sixteen clean 100 ml class A volumetric flasks were filled with ICP-MS grade standard for each of the 8 elements (2 flasks per element):

  • Arsenic
  • Barium
  • Cadmium
  • Chromium
  • Lead
  • Selenium
  • Mercury
  • Silver

Concentrations were at 10ppm, 100 ppb for Mercury. The 16 flasks were then placed in a room temperature stability chamber for 30 days.

After 30 days the flasks were emptied and split into two groups of 8, each set containing all 8 elements. Group A was acid washed manually by hand. Group B was washed in the Miele PG8593 Flex series labwasher using the Inorganica program and cleaning agents Procare 10AP and Neodisher Z.

Once the washing and drying was complete for both groups of glassware, they were brought back up to volume with fresh diluent and analyzed on the ICP-MS (Agilent Model 7500) for each of the metals listed.

RESULTS

CONCLUSION
Based on the results, the conclusion is that washing glassware for Trace metal testing in the Miele Flex Series Model PG8593 labwasher gives results as good as or better than handwashing. Chromium, Selenium, Cadmium, Arsenic, Mercury and Lead levels were the same or better in glassware cleaned in the labwasher. In the case of Silver the Miele labwasher PG8593 outperformed handwashing by a large measure.

Removing Barium was problematic using either handwashing or mechanical washing, it is notoriously difficult to remove. We suggest a more intensive wash program if analysis of this metal is being undertaken.
